Dr. Melanie L. Buffington, Associate Professor of Art Education, has been at VCU since 2006. Previously she was a middle school art teacher. Her current research interests include: public art, museum education, emerging technologies, culturally responsive pedagogy, contemporary art, and service-learning. She has been researching various aspects of the monuments on Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA for several years and has published and presented on the topic in various national and international venues. She is particularly interested in the intersection of art, history, and collective memory and how that is reflected in the pubic art that societies build.
